An EAN-13 bar code is divided into four areas:

  1. The number system - First number from left of the bar code.
  2. The manufacturer code - Second number system digit is printed as first character of the group of six numbers
  3. The product code – Product code is set of next five digits.
  4. Check digit – Check digit is the last number on right. Check digit is used to verify that a bar code has been scanned correctly.
